Terra – H is a new residence located in the Ganema area of Serifos Island. The central idea of the design is based on the creation of an underground house, its façade defined by a continuous line that alternates between curves and straight segments. This line curves inward to create a “hugging” terrace and outward to enhance the privacy of adjacent spaces. On one side of the house, the building transforms from underground to above-ground, revealing its lateral façade and creating a more private terrace on the side. At the rear, openings for the entrance, ventilation, and lighting align with the structure’s outline, emphasizing its geometric identity.

The external spaces and pergolas follow the same logic of alternating curves and straight lines. In the main terrace, beneath the pergola, a large outdoor dining area and seating are placed while in the sheltered terrace of the master bedroom, an outdoor jacuzzi is designed, as well as a large built-in day bed. Additionally, the outdoor space provides the possibility of constructing a swimming pool, with a shape that follows the form of the building and terrace, should future legislation allow.

A similar design approach is applied to the interior spaces. The entrance to the building is from the rear side, leading to a hall between the kitchen and dining room. The walls of the hall, with their prominent curves, resemble a funnel that directs the visitor from the narrow corridor to the large open-plan living area. The open-plan living room-dining room-kitchen space develops in an arched shape, offering different visual perspectives from its openings, while the fireplace is positioned exactly at the curve of the façade, emphasizing the central dynamic of the composition. Curved forms run through all the constructions and movable furniture, creating a sense of flow and continuity.

From the kitchen, a curved corridor begins, enhancing the sense of flow and, due to its curve, preventing a view to the end, thus offering greater privacy. This corridor leads to the master bedroom and master bathroom, while from the main bedroom, one can access the side private terrace. The bathroom has its own small internal planted courtyard. On the other side of the building, directly opposite the master bedroom, an external corridor leads to the rear of the building, where the other three bedrooms and their respective bathrooms are located.

The materials chosen support the complete integration of the residence with its environment. Externally, the underground section of the building is constructed with unplastered stonework, while internally, a colored earthy beige plaster is used on the walls, with floors covered by a poured material containing fine stones, consistent across both interior and exterior spaces. In the ceiling, wooden beams are placed radially in the curved sections and parallel in the straight sections, reinforcing the building’s distinctive shape.

Overall, the Terra-H residence combines organic lines, modern aesthetics, and a deep respect and integration into the natural landscape of Serifos.
